City of Mesa AED Program

Mesa Arizona is the third-largest city in Arizona and the nation’s 38th largest city.
The City provides the advantages of a thriving metropolis while maintaining the feel
of a suburban environment.  Just 15 miles east of Phoenix, Mesa covers 128 square
miles.

In recognition of the growing trend to place AEDs, but also the trend of those same
AEDs being placed in less than ideal areas and not being properly maintained, the
City took action.  With the leadership of the Fire Department, Jeff Zeiler (as CEO of
Life Saving Solutions) was contracted to help the City create a true Public Access
Defibrillation Program.

The strategy was simple; help make sure that the AEDs in the City were used in an
emergency.  By providing tools to the AED placed by the City while also offering
those same services for free to the public.  The only requirement for the public was
for them to register via the AED Program web page, a very simple and easy process.

By helping the public maintain their AEDs while also promoting public awareness of
the importance of bystander CPR, the City of Mesa and Life Saving Solutions will
greatly impact the survival rate of those stricken by Sudden Cardiac Arrest.  It is our
goal to increase survival rate from 3% to 10% by 2010.
